Gustavia villa or St Jean room: who shares the short week?

A Saint Barthélemy travel companion is the second name on a Gustavia villa or a St Jean hotel. The island sells rooms, not bunks, and a leftover single still pays the whole house in euros. You want the person already on the same tiny hop into Gustaf III, or on the same ferry from St Martin.

Saint Barthélemy is a French Caribbean collectivity next door to St Martin and Sint Maarten. Gustavia is the capital and the yacht harbor. St Jean is the swimming beach under the airport hill. French is first. English works in tourist rooms and at the villa desk. You pay in euros, even when a menu also prints dollars. Why does a villa week only work as two?

A villa here is priced as a house, by the night or by the week, in euros. Empty bedrooms still cost the week. You are agreeing which name owns the bed and which arrival you will both make.

French first does not mean the desk will split the rate for you. English in the tourist room does not turn a villa into a hostel. A second name is how the week becomes rational. Paying the whole house alone, then eating accras at a two-top, is how a pretty harbor becomes a bill you resent.

Fly into SBH, or take the ferry from St Martin?

Gustaf III is a short runway. Most hops come off Princess Juliana on Sint Maarten. Bags stay small because the aircraft is small. A leftover single still buys a whole taxi from the hill down to St Jean or over the ridge to Gustavia.

The other door is the catamaran from St Martin or Sint Maarten. Marigot on the French side, Philipsburg or Oyster Pond on the Dutch side: those are the docks people actually name. Ferries run when the channel allows it. They are not a metro. Write the company and the hour only after a ticket exists.

Mixing them is fine if you write both hours. Hoping the other person will figure out the quay is how you wait on the wrong island.

When is a short expensive week actually usable?

December to April is the dry window people actually book. Rooms and villas sell first then. Shoulder edges still work if both of you already hold the same nights. Later months can be wetter, and a cheaper villa in a squall is still a villa you paid for. Say the month you bought.

Five to eight nights is a week. Ten nights is already a long stay unless the house itself is the point. Adding a third-island hop and every beach on the map is how you spend the only calm morning in a taxi.

Gustavia or St Jean: which name owns the bed?

Name Gustavia if the harbor, the evening walk along the quay, and a town room are the week. Shell Beach is a short walk from that grid if you want a swim without moving the bags. Name St Jean if the swimming beach and the airport hill are the point. Those two names are the places people actually meet. Colombier, Flamands, and Lorient are real bays. They belong in the note only if you already sleep there.

A pair that lands and decides later often pays a taxi they both resent, then moves the bags midweek. There is no public bus that quietly fixes that. Small rental cars and agreed taxis are how you move. Write the car if you want more than one beach.

What do two people actually split in euros?

Four costs are the week.

• The villa or hotel room, priced per unit in euros, which is the whole reason to share
• Two seats on the same SBH hop, or two tickets on the same St Martin ferry
• A small hire car, or the taxis you already priced out loud
• Shared plates: accras, court-bouillon, a lobster you both agreed to order

A leftover single pays the whole house. That is why a roommate makes sense here. Keep the week short so nobody arrives with a two-week packing list.
