The advisory, then the city: who goes to Somalia with you?

A photograph of the Somali coast can make the week look empty and therefore easy. It is not. Sit with the other person and open the same government page before either of you names a lighthouse or a room. If that page still says stay home, the kind week is the one you cancel together. If you are both still going, the useful names are one permitted city, a reason that survives a second read, and the domestic flight you would take instead of the road.

The UK FCDO travel advice for Somalia, still current in August 2026, advises against all travel to Somalia, including Somaliland, except the regions of Awdal, Maroodijeh, and Sahil. Those three regions sit at "all but essential travel." The stated reasons are terrorist groups and continuing violence, including fighting near Mogadishu. Consular support is severely limited. Your own government's page may differ. Read that page the week you talk. This post cannot certify a visa, a safe road, or an insurer.

Somali and Arabic are the languages you will actually hear. Money is the Somali shilling and, in practice, the US dollar. Poetry and nomadic heritage are real. So is the long coast. None of that cancels an advisory. If you are looking for travel companion dates after that same page, say the city and the reason first. The lighthouse photograph can wait.

What must you check before you treat Somalia as a trip?

Check your government's advisory the week you talk about dates. Check whether your organisation, if you have one, will let you go. Check whether your insurer will say the country's name. Check whether you have a reason that is not "the coast looks empty on a map." A second person does not make a road safer. Public notes here stay plain: skip the road between cities if you can, and fly domestic if you have to move. Sharing a permitted movement can mean sharing a room and the airport run. Matching on a lighthouse photograph is how someone inherits a risk they never sat with. If the honest answer after the advisory is do not go, you do not owe this country a listing.

Is Somaliland the same trip as Somalia?

No. Somaliland is a separate access conversation: different authorities, a different airport story, and a different set of checks. FCDO still treats most of the country, including Somaliland, as "against all travel," with only Awdal, Maroodijeh, and Sahil at "all but essential." That is not a beach week. If you mean one of those three regions, write the region name and do the access work for that name. A Hargeisa week does not belong under a Mogadishu flag to look adventurous. A Mogadishu week does not belong under a Somaliland flag to look safer. They are not interchangeable.

Why does a Somalia week start as work or family, not surf?

The people who can actually go are usually already going for work, family, or another permission that survives an advisory read. A useful trip leads with the city you will actually sleep in, the organisation or family reason, and the fact that this is not independent tourism. The second person is there so you do not sit a required movement alone, and so the dollar float is counted in the open. They are not there to make a high-risk capital feel like a surf town. Eat what the city is already cooking if you are already there: spiced bariis, camel meat, sambuusa, canjeero, a diced suqaar plate. That is food. It is not a reason to book. Skip the road between cities. Fly domestic if you must change cities. Somali and Arabic are the working languages. Dollars sit beside shillings. A lighthouse photograph is not an itinerary.

Which names are cities, and which are not meetups?

Mogadishu is the capital, a port city with a long, hard history and a rebuilding present. Kismaayo is a southern port. Garoowe is a Puntland administrative hub, sometimes described as more commercially ordinary than the southern war vocabulary, which is still not the same as a tourist town. Bu'aale sits on the Jubba as an agricultural centre and is written as inaccessible to international travelers. The name worth putting in the trip is the one city you will sleep in. Stacking Mogadishu, Kismaayo, and Garoowe on one listing is how a trip pretends the road is open. Leave Bu'aale off entirely. It is not a pin.

What would two people split if they are already moving there?

If you are already going, the bill is a security posture, not a backpacker trio.

• The room you are actually allowed to use, as a twin if that is allowed
• US-dollar cash, counted, because cards are not a plan
• Domestic air seats on the same morning if you must change cities
• Whatever movement and protection your organisation already requires

A leftover single seat on a required movement is how people improvise a road they were told not to take. Sharing the flight keeps the morning boring. That still is not a sightseeing week nobody sold you.

How do you match without selling a coastline?
