The week gets easier when the other person is already on the same contract and the same dawn start from Sesriem, because that loop was built for two drivers.

Windhoek is the clean, high-altitude capital and the usual pickup: German colonial leftovers, a compact center, and the desk where you collect the car. Walvis Bay is the Atlantic door, a lagoon with flamingos and the start of Sandwich Harbour thinking. Rundu sits on the Kavango and is only a hub if the northeast is real. The travel companion you want here is the second driver and the other name on the lodge twin, not someone who packed for a guided 4x4 they did not book.

English is official. Oshiwambo, Afrikaans, and German all turn up. You do not need a translator as much as you need a 4x4 or a 2WD you already agreed, a pickup hour in Windhoek, and a lodge that does not need a stranger from the next table. Eat kapana from a street grill, game meat if you actually want oryx or kudu, potjiekos when a lodge cooks the stew, biltong in the car, and mopane worms only if both of you meant that plate. Pay in Namibian dollars or South African rand. A listing that says safari and does not say self-drive is how people expect a guided truck they never reserved.

What does a Namibia gravel week actually look like?

Sossusvlei wants a dawn start from Sesriem, not a same-morning flight from Windhoek. The Skeleton Coast is fuel, wind, and a second pair of eyes on a long empty line. Etosha is waterholes and rest-camp units that already sell as twins. May to October is the dry window when those three pieces behave like a plan. A week is Windhoek plus one highlight. Ten to fourteen days is dunes, coast, and the park on one loop.

The kitchen is not what you came to split. The car is. Say self-drive early, before anyone packs as if a guide is already waiting at the gate.
