You already bought the Dominican Republic week, and you do not want to walk the Zona Colonial at night by yourself. The kind question is which coast owns the bed, because Santo Domingo walks on cobbles and Cabarete launches kiters into wind. Those two bags do not sit happily on the same Caribe Tours seat. Punta Cana is a fine bracelet trip if that is what you meant. It is not this week.

The island is Spanish, African, and Taíno at once, with merengue and bachata in the street whether you asked or not. Santo Domingo is the oldest continuously inhabited European-founded capital in the Americas, Zona Colonial next to modern neighborhoods like Piantini. Cabarete is wind, kiters, and a different bus. A travel companion who already named Cabarete will pack for wind. One who named Santo Domingo will pack for cobbles. Write the coast so the other bag is the right one.

San Juan de la Maguana sits in a fertile southern valley under the Central range, useful if someone actually wants inland fields and Taíno history instead of another beach adjective. Bonao is the hydrangea town, a mountain pause on the way toward the Cibao. San Francisco de Macorís is cacao country: markets, soil, and almost no resort script. Those inland names are how you prove the trip is not a cloned east-coast flyer.

Because the colonial city and the north-coast wind are not the same week. Someone who packed resort sandals will hate Zona Colonial cobbles after dark. Someone who packed only city shoes will hate a Cabarete launch. Name both coasts, or honestly name one, while the Caribe Tours ticket still has a refund window. Matching on the word Caribbean is how you end up in the terminal queue with one kite bag and one lobby sandal.

Spanish is the language. English appears in tourist desks and fades inland. A second Spanish speaker is a gift if you have one, and a second pair of eyes on the bags if you do not. Nobody needs to pretend they are a hired translator. Santo Domingo is the collision of the Zona Colonial and neighborhoods like Piantini. Write the city first if that is night one.

Share a Zona Colonial room that already quotes for two. Walk the old streets in the evening, not as a cruise-hour checklist. Eat mangú in the morning. Let la bandera (rice, beans, and meat) be lunch without irony. Sancocho is the stew you order when the table is really hungry. Mofongo and tostones will follow you up the coast. Those plates are the capital. They are not a reason to skip the bus booking.
